Professional Development Activity Site

I've created a Google Site to inform others about the topic of "Genius Hour."

  1. I'm more concerned about content at this point, references will be addressed after I am satisfied with the rest of the site.

Questions about the rubric (http://goo.gl/RgA2qk), it seems like this is meant more for written papers. Do we really need to create a title page for a website?

    1. Good point. What I want to be sure of is that your topic is clear and that your name is also not hiding. I think your title page could be a part of the introduction and definition if that makes more sense to you.

  2. Awesome! I heard about this. I was told this idea originated in some company in Australia. Supposedly, they offered every Friday afternoon as their creative time. The employees were allowed to wear sweaters and jeans and they ordered pizza and stuff too. They made an event out of it.

They were allowed to work on whatever project they wanted so long as they presented the information to everyone else at the end of the month. Supposedly it saved this company from tanking because production went up like 300% and they came up with a ton of amazing ideas. If I find the video I'll send you a link. It actually had allot of interesting economic ideas as well.

you got a super cool topic, I'm jealous.

Strength: Your content and formatting is very strong. I can't find too many things that are hard to work with in your site. All of your information is short, sweet, and to the point and I love it

Weaknesses: Very nitpicky. Some of your hyperlinks don't cover some letters. Your website title is edfi575, I suggest changing that. You mentioned you need to be satisfied with your references before you continue but I suggest at least getting a few things down quickly, you can always add or remove things later.

    Keep up the good work!

  3. Strengths:

I think that your design and layout is perfect for your topic. I believe that the content you have right now is good and covers most of what needs to be covered throughout your workshop. You have great videos that enhance your material and help your participants to understand what Genius Hour really is. I think your activity is awesome and really allows your participants to get a good idea of what Genius Hour is and how it would work in a classroom.

    Weaknesses:

There are a few weaknesses that I was able to see throughout your workshop. First, I would just try to add in a little more content about Genius Hour. The videos truly help explain what it is, but sometimes writing it down and explaining it adds more depth to the concept. Next, I would add in a few explanations to your "Examples" section. Right now, you have a lot of links and then videos. I would add in a description for each of the links you have provided. This will at least let your participants know what the link is about and what the participant will get out of the link. Other than that, I would try to add in some pictures. You have plenty of videos that enhance your work, but I think pictures help to do this, as well!

    Concerns:

I have noticed this with a few other presentations, as well, but there are a few requirements that you are missing that were listed on the rubric for the workshop. To keep it short and sweet, I will list out the different elements that you are missing and where I found this on the rubric!

Definition and Introduction to Technology Section
-In this section you included a definition and introduction, but you were also supposed to provide a section that included substantial background on the topic. I would make sure to include this.

    Topic in Context:
Although you provide multiple examples, I do not see the section where you explain to teachers why is is important to understand this technology.

    Activity:

On top of the activities, you were supposed to explain internal and external incentives that would be taken away from your workshop by the participants. In this section, you were also supposed to provide a way in which participants can evaluate and review your workshop. For example, I used polleverywhere.com. I said that I was going to ask my participants questions about my workshop and have them respond on polleverywhere.com. Next, you were supposed to have a way in which participants can continue their education on your concept. For me, I explained that my participants could give me their email and I would email them updates on the technology, or they could go to my blog to look for updates on the technology. Finally, there was supposed to be a separate resources page for the participants that provided them with links or links to articles on the topic.

If you adjust these few things, your workshop will be outstanding!

  4. STRENGTHS - I read a book about Google a few years ago and I remember it discussing how they have incorporated this idea with great success. After checking out your site I'm interested in the possibilities it has in my own classroom.

WEAKNESSES - I think you were going for simplicity with the white background/black text formatting, which can definitely work for certain things. I wouldn't call it a weakness, but a splash of color here or there may help the reader differentiate things a bit. That's more of a personal preference on my part though.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS - As Stuart mentioned, you had a very interesting topic. You did a great job breaking it down and explaining!

  5. Like Stuart I am so jealous of this topic. Its such an exciting concept, especially for a classroom.
    Strengths:
I really liked the beginning video. It really explains the topic right off the bat. I really think all your links and videos enhance your topic and workshop. You picked some good ones.
    Weaknesses:
One thing I would suggest would be to change the order of your navigation on the left side of the page. Your pages are not in order, such as Intro, definition, topic in context, etc. I had a REALLY hard time figuring out how to do this once my website was created. It took me days, unfortunately to get it right. This will help if someone is going through your website on their own to be able to navigate a little better in the order you intend.
    Concerns:
I would say add a bit of color to your website. I like the simple nature of the workshop. I would just say to add a bit of something to catch their eye and make your website stand out a bit.

  6. Let me just say that you had me with soul pancake, I so love that kid.
This topic is very interesting and our business teacher has implemented it into her final quarter of the year.
I believe that this tactic will see growth in the future.
The reality is that we live in a now society so realistically if your webpage can hold my interest simply because it holds my interest not merely because I have to read or look over the information then I believe the webpage is successful. I was engrossed in learning from your webpage and I was excited to see what information you were going to provide next.

  7. Strengths - I really liked your activity page. It was nice that you have three activities to help people learn about genius hour.

Weakness- I did not know a whole lot on this topic, but I feel like a background in your introduction would help other people who may not know much about the topic.

Secondly, a little more color on your page would make it more intriguing.
